This section explains how to replace hardware components in Supermicro appliance platforms running Qumulo Core.
Before You Begin
Before replacing any hardware component:
-
Verify cluster protection status. Ensure the cluster can tolerate a node or drive going offline.
-
Contact Qumulo Care. For component failures, contact the Qumulo Care team to verify the failed component and obtain a replacement.
-
Review Supermicro documentation. Follow all safety guidelines and procedures in the Supermicro service manual for your platform.
-
Power considerations. Some components require the node to be powered off, while others (like drives and power supplies) are hot-swappable.
Hot-Swappable Components
The following components can be replaced without powering off the node:
| Component | Hot-Swappable | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Drives (NVMe, HDD) | Yes | Verify cluster protection before removal |
| Power Supplies | Yes | Redundant PSUs allow hot-swap |
| Fans (most models) | Yes | Redundant fans allow hot-swap |
Cold-Swap Components
The following components require the node to be powered off:
| Component | Power Off Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Memory (DIMMs) | Yes | Follow ESD precautions |
| CPU | Yes | Requires thermal paste reapplication |
| Network Cards | Yes | May require BIOS configuration |
| Motherboard | Yes | Contact Qumulo Care |
Replacing Drives
Overview
All drives in Qumulo clusters are hot-swappable. Qumulo Core automatically handles drive removal and reintegration.
Procedure
-
Identify the failed drive using the Qumulo Web UI or CLI:
qq cluster_slots_status -
Verify cluster protection before removing the drive:
qq cluster_state -
Locate the physical drive using the drive bay mapping for your platform. See Drive Bay Mapping.
-
Verify the serial number matches the failed drive before removal.
- Remove the failed drive:
- Press the release latch on the drive carrier.
- Pull the drive carrier straight out.
- Remove the drive from the carrier.
- Install the replacement drive:
- Mount the new drive in the carrier.
- Insert the carrier into the bay until it clicks.
- Qumulo Core automatically detects and incorporates the new drive.
- Verify the new drive appears healthy in the Qumulo Web UI or CLI.
Platform-Specific Notes
GrandTwin (AS-2115GT-HNTR)
Each node in the GrandTwin chassis has dedicated drive bays. Ensure you identify the correct node before replacing drives.
Hybrid Models (SH-series)
The SH-series models have separate NVMe cache bays and HDD storage bays. Verify you are replacing the correct drive type.
Replacing Power Supplies
Overview
All Supermicro appliance platforms use redundant power supplies, allowing hot-swap replacement.
Procedure
-
Verify redundancy: Ensure both PSUs are connected and at least one is functioning.
-
Identify the failed PSU by checking the PSU LED (amber indicates failure).
- Remove the failed PSU:
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Press the release latch.
- Slide the PSU out of the chassis.
- Install the replacement PSU:
- Slide the new PSU into the bay until it clicks.
- Connect the power cord.
- Verify the PSU LED shows green.
Replacing Memory (DIMMs)
DIMM replacement requires powering off the node. Ensure cluster protection before proceeding.
Procedure
-
Gracefully shut down the node using the Qumulo Web UI or CLI.
-
Power off the node and disconnect power cables.
-
Follow ESD precautions (ground yourself before handling DIMMs).
-
Locate the failed DIMM using IPMI logs or error messages.
- Remove the failed DIMM:
- Open the DIMM slot release tabs.
- Lift the DIMM straight out.
- Install the replacement DIMM:
- Align the DIMM with the slot notch.
- Press down firmly until the release tabs click.
- Power on the node and verify it rejoins the cluster.
Contacting Qumulo Care
For hardware failures, contact the Qumulo Care team:
- Email: care@qumulo.com
- Phone: 1-855-577-7544
- Web: Qumulo Care Portal
When contacting support, provide:
- Cluster name and node serial number
- Description of the issue
- Error messages from Qumulo Web UI or CLI
- IPMI event logs (if available)
